The HEART of the Holidays: Join all of us downtown Middletown this year!
By: Jeri Lewis
In as far back as one can remember, Middletown has traditions new and old. Many still talk about filling up on Thanksgiving food during the day and then driving around town looking at lights. One memory is of the Santa and Reindeer on the roof of the old Central Store and lining of trees on buildings around downtown. This year’s no different as there are things to do throughout the week and every weekend starting this Saturday, November 24, 2018, with the Santa Parade and Tree Lighting with a very special heart behind it, Mason Matlock the Parade Grand Marshal and the lighting of the Star with Middletown Fire Department!
In 2006 the Santa Parade was founded with a collaborative effort of Miami Middletown and Downtown Middletown Business owners and Leader Jamie Murphy. As the years went, it has evolved into more partnerships and volunteers. In 2010, the City planted a Colorado white spruce Tree to add to the festivities downtown. Today, Linda Mormon and The Community Middletown Foundation continue this family fun party in the streets followed by the lighting of the Santa Tree at Governors Square with Kingswell. Madison High School Choir and Breiel Church’s Cast for Middletown Christmas at the Sorg will sing in the holiday spirit with songs around the tree as Santa and the parade Grand Marshal turn the lights on!
This year is the first year the parade will have a Grand Marshal, 5-year-old Mason Matlock. Mason is diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. (HLHS for short.) He has had 3 open heart surgeries. The first one when he was one week old. The second, at 4 months old and the third surgery when he was 4 yrs old. He is doing absolutely outstanding and is beating all odds! It’s only fitting he is our Grand Marshal as we get to the HEART of Middletown.
Along with the parade and Santa Tree at Governors square, there is a long list of AWESOME events this year being led by DMI (Downtown Middletown Inc) that will be sure to get even the biggest Grinch in the holiday spirit! A Middie Tree, Letters to Santa and even a storefront decorating contest! Here is a list of events for all to share and attend! No matter your families’ traditions old or new, these traditions are must-see events that will remind us of the meaning of the Holiday’s at the heart of our town.
