The “ink” on the City of Middletown press release was barely dry when the social media posts and links to news articles began to question Mr. Palenick’s employment record.
On May 18, 2020 the City of Middletown Ohio released a statement about their intent to hire James Palenick as Middletown’s City Manager. The news released mentioned his current role and his vast 30 year career, but failed to mention his past employment history with Rio Ranch New Mexico, Bay City Michigan or Gastonia, North Carolina.
When asked to comment,Middletown Mayor Nicole Condrey provided a statement to Butler County Connect regarding Middletown Ohio City Council’s decision to hire James Palenick:
“The City of Middletown City Council conducted a thorough nation-wide search for a City Manager in conjunction with Management Partners. We are extremely pleased with the selection of Mr. Palenick as a new leader in Middletown. The City is aware of Mr. Palenick’s past employment, and Management Partners performed a thorough reference check. City Council addressed past employment issues directly with Mr. Palenick; collectively we felt his explanations solidified our decision to hire him. Mr. Palenick is dedicated to the strategic successes of the communities he has served. In a City Manager form of government like Middletown’s, the City Manager bridges the gap between the politics and the execution of the mission. Mr. Palenick is willing to work hard, bring successes to our city, and dedicate himself to the citizens of Middletown. We are confident he will gather the input of the city and execute the mission Middletown asks of him in a respectful and accountable manner. Based on his background and interviews, City Council believes Mr. Palenick has the right mix of experience, demeanor, and management style to bring the Middletown community together and lead us to our brighter future.”
