North End Civic Organizations Hosting City-Wide ‘Joe Nuxhall Day!’
By: Jeff Gambrell
HAMILTON – Next month marks a historic milestone for one of North End’s most famous resident’s, Joe Nuxhall. It was seventy-five years ago that on June 10, 1944, at the youthful age of fifteen years old, Joe Nuxhall gained national attention becoming the youngest player to appear during a major league baseball game. To commemorate the occasion, Hamilton’s North End Citizens for Community Action (NECCA) and Renewing the North End From Within (RENEW) are co-hosting a city-wide ‘Joe Nuxhall Day!’ which they hope to make an annual event.
On the morning of Saturday, June 15th, there will be a resource fair featuring several local agencies starting at 10:00 am presented by Healthy Hamilton. Participating agencies include Primary Health Solutions, Hamilton Police Department, Hamilton Fire Department, Envision Partnerships, Great Miami Valley YMCA, Hamilton Urban Gardens (HUGS), U.S. Bank, 17 Strong and the Hamilton Joes. At 11:30 am, all participants will be treated to a free picnic lunch. A special ceremony will be held at noon to dedicate the North End Ball Fields to Joe Nuxhall. The remainder of the afternoon will consist of organized baseball games for all ages. Participants are asked to bring a glove if they have one.
Tim Spoonster, the event organizer, is an advocate for Nuxhall as a role model for the North End neighborhood to look up to.
“We are really fortunate that Joe Nuxhall led such good life that it still gives us cause today to celebrate his legacy”, says Spoonster. “Through determination, and persistence he took the opportunity that every boy dreams of, to be a big league ball player, and used it to become a legend not only on the playing field but also in the press box as the radio voice of the Cincinnati Reds. Not only a fierce competitor on the field, he was also a caring and genuine man, and it is that combination that endeared him to all of us who came to know him.”
Great American Ball Park Hamilton Night
Also happening that evening at the Great American Ball Park will be ‘Hamilton Night at the Reds’ as the Redlegs take on the Texas Rangers at 7:10 pm. Tickets may be purchased online for $16 or $25 with a portion of ticket sales going towards funding a State of Ohio Historical Marker honoring Joe Nuxhall to be placed at the North End Athletic Fields, where Joe was first discovered by the Cincinnati Reds scouts. Donations for the marker are also being accepted.
