Hamilton Joes to kick off 2021 season with new charity program

HAMILTON, Ohio – The Hamilton Joes will start their 2021 season at 7:05pm on Friday June 4th at UC Health Stadium in Florence, Kentucky. The local collegiate summer baseball team will play the Cincinnati Steam, the team’s local rival, for its opening game.

The Joes play their home opener against the Richmond Jazz on June 5th at 7:05pm at their home stadium, Foundation Field. The team will compete in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League once again this year under baseball’s traditional nine-inning rules.

The team, which bears the name of Hamilton native and Cincinnati Reds great Joe Nuxhall, will return this year after experiencing a season cancellation in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The team and the GLSCL opted to cancel last year’s season due to government health orders and recommendations.

Joes President and General Manager Darrel Grissom, who also coaches the Miami University Hamilton baseball team, expressed his excitement to be back in the game after the cancelled 2020 season.

“It was a shame to have it all cancelled, but we’re happy to have it back this year,” he said. “The fans are excited.”

Team members will live with members of the Hamilton community, and will spend the season in the community. Mindy Mueller of Community Development Professionals is one of the player hosts.

“It’s a great way for people in the community to engage with the team,” Mueller said, emphasizing that hosting allows the family to connect more with the players and team.

This year, the Joes are introducing a new program that promotes nonprofit organizations and gives them a chance to win $500. At each home game, a “nonprofit of the game” will be named. The nonprofit will be recognized and named at the game. If the Joes’ pitchers get eleven strikeouts, $500 will be donated to the nonprofit.

Tickets for games during the 2021 season will cost $5 for general adult admission. For more information, visit the Joes’ website at hamiltonjoes.com
