HAMILTON — It’s been a banner year for Matt Neal: he’s a singer who released a musical album in the same 12 months he has directed three theater productions for Greater Hamilton Civic Theatre.
Neal’s current show is “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” which opens at 8 p.m. Thursday and runs through Sunday on stage at Parrish Auditorium. It has more than a dozen local actors and begs the question, is Nurse Ratched really the villain in this play?
“Are you sure? Double check,” Neal writes in his director’s note in the show’s program handed to patrons who will see the play.

In addition to directing, Neal released “At Your Service” in early January 2019. It’s an album with everything from rock-n-roll to contemporary musical theatre songs, featuring the singer’s baritone voice.
As far as this weekend’s “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” performances, Neal says patrons should forget the movie of the same name and go deeper in thought with the GHCT production, which questions whether the patients in the insane asylum are actually insane, or just misunderstood.
