Beautiful Colors Aims to Create Intentional Connections Through Chalk Art
By: Jeff Gambrell
HAMILTON – Beautiful Colors has recently announced their summer 2021 tour and will soon be coming to a sidewalk near you. Conceived by local artist Arnita Gunn-Mitchell, Beautiful Colors invites community members of all ages and artistic abilities to meet up and create something beautiful together. They recently had their spring launch on May 20th at Hamilton’s Kevin Lodder Park (Neilan Boulevard near the dam) resulting in a successful turnout with new connections made.
Gun-Mitchell is geared up for this season with new offerings and partnerships. “We are very excited about all the upcoming events and we hope that the message of community, unity, equity, and equality is shown in each thing we do”, stated Gunn-Mitchell. “Art doesn’t care anything about who you are or what you have or what you look like. When you pick up the chalk you are an artist”.
This Friday, June 18th is their first Chalk-The-Walk BC Art Festival, an all-day event
taking place around the courthouse square. Beginning at 9 am, this event hopes to
create unique, positive art. Chalk will be provided; however, chalk donations are
appreciated. Bystanders will be able to vote for their favorite finished works with winners being announced Monday, June 21st.
Beautiful Colors also hosts a monthly event known as Chalk Together. Occurring the first Thursday each month, they meet at a different location to create chalk art together. With the generous support of Hamilton’s 17Strong Movie in the Park grant, their August 5th Chalk Together event will feature a Block Party. Prizes, face painting, free popcorn, and more will highlight this family event celebrating diversity. A viewing of the new Disney film Raya and the Last Dragon will take place at sunset, but the event itself commences at 4 pm at Benninghofen Park.
