Butler County students will ‘Bring It On’ the musical stage this month
For Butler County Connect
Encore Youth Theatre’s performers are Butler County junior high and high schoolers, and they have one message this summer: “Bring It On.”
That’s the title of the musical the youth, who are in grades 7-12 and recent graduates, will perform on stage at Miami University Hamilton July 19-21.
“Bring It On” is directed by Ben Schneider, a music specialist for an area school district who was once a student performing in Encore’s shows. Vocal direction is by Betsy Horton, an experienced musician who is often volunteering with local theater organizations.
Both Schneider and Horton are veterans with the Encore group.
Lynn Huff has been producing musicals for the group for many years alongside co-producer Diane Noonan. Together, the pair has managed Encore’s business and behind-the-scenes work, namely putting together a strong team of volunteers to build sets, create costumes, design and run lights, manage the stage crew, direct the shows, and more.
Encore has been such a force in local theater, it’s had performers who went on to be in the national spotlight performing in New York and other places around the world.
“We have reached more than 2,400 young adults in Butler County throughout the past 24 years,” Noonan said about Encore. “I have been privileged to work with some of the best young people Butler County has to offer.”
Lin-Manuel Miranda, of “Hamilton” musical fame, is one of the creators of the music and lyrics for “Bring It On.” The show is loosely based on the 2000 movie of the same name and is centered on the competitive world of cheerleading.
Encore’s production includes a live orchestra and will be on stage in Parrish Auditorium.
Those who attend “Bring It On” this month who have attended Encore shows in the past may see familiar faces, as many volunteers have been with it since the group’s inception. Former youth members participate in ensuring the success of the shows, and some have even joined the board of trustees.
“Once you become part of Encore, it gets in your blood,” Noonan said.
